"Er, doctor cakap kalau Mak nak balik rumah, boleh." She was happy. She missed home and all the cucu. Kids were not allowed in the ward, and all her cucu were under 12 (at that time).

Kisah Penjual Tempe..
Dia meninjau-ninjau kawan-kawan sesama penjual
Alangkah seronoknya dia, ternyata memang benar tempenya masih belum menjadi!

datanglah.....
Tapi mataku.......semakin gelap.
Tolong bukakan mataku.
"Tekanan darahnya amat rendah". sayup sayap kedengaran suara doktor.
Sedetik lagi sakaratul maut datang.Sedetik lagi izrail datang. Sedetik lagi malaikat maut dtang.
Nenekku datang,"Nenek...........".
"Kau dahaga cu,kau lapar cu,mahu air??Ini gelas penuh air madu, kalau cucu mahu masuk syurga, minum air ini".
"Ibu......". Ibuku datang, Ibu menggoyangkan buah susunya.
" Ini ibumu. Air susu ini membesarkanmu, nak.Buangkan islam, matilah dalam agama yahudi.....".
Ayah.......kau datang ayah.......".
"Nenek....ibu.....ayah......suara kau kah tadi?? Kenapa kau berubahlaku?? Atau suara syaitan yang ingin memurtadkan aku??
"Mengucap sayang, mengucap.Asyhaduallailahaillallah......". Ucapan itu diajukan sekali lagi ke telingaku.Itu suara ibu. Tapi lidahku sudah menjadi kelu.
Manusia-manusia berjubah hitam datang."Mari ikut kami". Manusia-manusia berjubah hijau datang membawa bersamanya payung hijau, katanya "Mari ikut kami". Cahaya putih datang. Datang kilatan hitam. Datang sinaran kuning.Cahaya merah datang.
Ah,busuknya, hanyirnya, hancingnya......".
"Assalamualaikum......".
"Siapa yang memberi salam itu?".
"Aku".
"Kau siapa wahai pemuda???".
Oh!Tuhan, aku banyak dosa.
Aku melihat kak long dan kak ngah menangis. Aku juga lihat mata abah bengkak.
Tiba-tiba badanku di sirami air.Air apa ini?????
"Tolong....sejuk!!!!Kenapa air ini berbau air kapur barus. Tolong jangan tekan perutku dengan kuat, sakit!!!!Kenapa ramai orang melihat aku???
Aku malu.....malu.....malu......!!!!!!".
Aku di usung ke suatu ruang. Aku lihat kain putih dibentangkan.
"Nanti, tunggu!!jangan bungkus aku.Kenapa kalian semua buat aku macam ini? Tolong rimas....panas........".
Kemudian aku di letakkan di suatu sudut. Beberapa orang termasuk tok imam menyembahyangkanku.
Aku teringat kata-kata ustazku dahulu.
Aku diusung setapak demi setapak".
"Al-Fatihah!" Keengaran suara tok imam.Kelihatan ibu, kak long, kak ngah dan lain-lain mengekori di belakang. Tapi kemana dia bawanya aku?".
Nun jauh di sana, kelihatan tanah perkuburan kampungku.
"Ke situkah aku dibawanya? Tolong turunkan aku,aku takut!!!!!!".
"Perlahan-lahan",aku terdengar suara tok imam memberitahu.
"Nanti!Nanti!Tolong!Tolong ayah,ibu!Jangan tinggalkan aku seorang. Aku takut!!!Gelap!!!Panas!!!Tolong !!!!
THIS IS A GOOD STORY BUT THE AUTHOR LEFT OUT ONE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN DEATH.....
Tapi ia amat menyakitkan andai kita melaluinya sambil lewa...

2...Allah won't ask the square footage of your house, He'll ask how many people you welcomed into your home.
3...Allah won't ask about the clothes you had in your closet, He'll ask how many you helped to clothe.
4... Allah won't ask what your highest salary was; He'll ask if you compromised your character to obtain it.

Bananas... This is very interesting.
combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial
boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a
strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit
with the world's leading athletes.
But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also
help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions,
making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people
suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana.
This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body
converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and
generally make you feel happier. PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The
vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of haemoglobin in
the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium
yet low in salt, making it the perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so,
the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to
make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood
pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped
through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and
lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the
potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore
normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana
milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the
help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk
soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you
suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood
sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the
affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it
amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria
found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and
crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese
were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to
avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels
by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders
because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that
can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also
neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit
that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant
mothers. In Thailand, for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because
they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12
they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help
the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat,
sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we
are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium
levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in "The New England Journal of Medicine,
"eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by
strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off
a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the
yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it
to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three
times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals.
It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around.
So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so
that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

Something to share..
An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern
sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quraan .
His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in
every way he could. One day the grandson asked, "Papa, I try to read
the Quraan just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do
understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does
reading the Quraan do?"
The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and
replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a
basket of water." The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked
out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and
said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him
back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran
faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of
breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water
in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.
The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of
water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out the door
to watch the boy try again.
At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show
his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water
would leak out before he got back to the house.
The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he
reached his grandfather the basket was again empty.
Out of breath, he said, "See Papa, it's useless!"
"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."
The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the
basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal
basket and was now clean, inside and out.
"Son, that's what happens when you read the Quraan. You might not
understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be
changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives."

Do You Hate Someone??
Do you hate someone? Do you really hate someone? You haven't spoken to him for a while? You've been blaming him?
You're not the only one; the Muslim Ummah today is diseased with this to the extent that almost every Muslim knows another Muslim who he hates.
The Ummah is like a building with the Muslims as it's bricks, brotherhood is the cement. Without forgiveness you cannot have brotherhood.
OK then, he wronged you. He deceived you. He backbited you. He lied to you. But even in these extreme situations the Qur'an and the Hadith teach us that we have to forgive others (especially those who hurt us the most) if we wish to earn the forgiveness of Allah on the day of judgement. We have all committed many sins, made many mistakes and no doubt we have wronged others, we have deceived others, we have backbited others and no doubt we have lied to others.
So what makes us focus onto brothers' and sisters' errors while we remain unconscious of our own. Not to forgive is like to live in arrogance, and ignorance of our own shortcomings.
Forgiveness is linked with piety and God-consciousness, is there anybody who is not without sin? Is there anybody who can be arrogant enough to say that he does not need to forgive? Do we not know that Allah forgives those who forgive others? Therefore, we should realise the difficulties of others and forgive them. Allah says in the Qur'an:
"Be quick in the forgiveness from your Lord, and pardon (all) men - for Allah loves those who do good."
[Surah ali Imran; 3:133-134]
And we know that Allah Himself is Ar-Rahmaan (the Most Compassionate) and Ar-Raheem (the Most Merciful) and that His Mercy is infinite, and that no matter the sin (except shirk) Allah is always willing to answer the person's call for forgiveness. In fact Allah loves the tear drop that falls from the eye of one who sincerely seeks the forgiveness of his Lord.
And Allah loves us to have hearts that are ready to forgive.
The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) once asked his companions;
"Do you know what will cause you to have high walled palaces in Paradise (as a symbol of great reward) and will cause you to be raised by God?" When they replied in the negative, he said,
"To be forgiving and to control yourself in the face of provocation, to give justice to the person who was unfair and unjust to you, to give to someone even though he did not give to you when you were in need and to keep connection with someone who may not have reciprocated your concern."
Similarly the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said that the best of people are those who are slow to get angry and quick to forgive. On the other hand the worst of people are those, he said who get angry quickly but are slow to forgive.
The characteristic that makes a person most likely to forgive is the purity of his or her heart. Apologies must be accepted, the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said that:
"Whoever apologises to his brother and that apology is not accepted, then the person who refuses to accept the apology bears the sin of one who takes the property of another unjustly. "
And the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) also said that:
"The doors of the Garden are open on Monday and Thursday. Every Muslim slave who does not associate anything with Allah is forgiven except for the man who has enmity between him and his brother. It is said, 'Leave those two until they have made a reconciliation. Leave those two until they have made a reconciliation.''
If we look at the example and the character of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) we can see that he was always forgiving and never showed enmity to anyone except those who waged war against him. There was an old lady who used to throw rubbish in his way every day, on one occasion she did not throw rubbish in the street, so he decided to go and see what was the matter. She was ill in bed, to her amazement, the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) came to see her and find out about her.
She accepted Islam.
This is the example of the man whom we claim to follow. Thumamah, as the chief of his tribe had killed many Muslims. On his travels, he was caught by the Muslim soldiers and was taken to the Prophet's masjid and tied to one of the pillars. The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) commanded his companions to untie him and give him the best food. The Messenger of God (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) was indeed a mercy for the worlds.
We should similarly be merciful with each other. First of all, we ourselves should not do anything to upset our brothers and sisters (because this is in itself a part of mercy) and then we should forgive those who have upset us or made us angry. We will never be a strong ummah if we are not able to forgive.
Some might say that to forgive is a sign of weakness and humiliation, and for them it is better to be strong and preserve their honor. But honor in the eyes of Allah lies in forgiveness.
"But indeed if any shows patience and forgives that would truly be an exercise of courageous will and resolution in the conduct of affairs."
[surah 42:43]
If we are to be really strong then we have to be strong against Shaytaan and forgive our brothers and sisters, and in this way maybe Allah will decide insha-Allah to forgive ourselves for our many mistakes.
" ...honour in the eyes of Allah lies in forgiveness....."

The 90/10 Principle Author : Stephen Covey
Have you read this before? Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle? 10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react..
What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%.
The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%. How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; can control how you react..
Let's use an example. You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be determined by how you react? You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in our relationship with your spouse and daughter. Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning.
Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?
The answer is D. You had no control over what appended with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your a day. Here is what could have and should have happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having. Notice the difference? Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why?
Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction.
Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle. If someone says something negative about you, don't be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don't have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out etc.
How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off) Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?
Remember the 90/10 principle; now do not worry about it. You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job. The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.
Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.
Now you know the 90-10 principle. Apply it and you will be amazed at the results. You will lose nothing if you try it. The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle. The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache. There never seem to be a success in life. Bad days follow bad days. Terrible things seem to be constantly happening.
There is constant stress, lack of joy, and broken relationships. Worry consumes time. Anger breaks friendships and life seems dreary and is not enjoyed to the fullest. Friends are lost. Life is a bore and often seems cruel. Does this describe you? If so, do not be discouraged You can be different!
Understand and apply the 90/10 principle. It will change your life.

Petua dari Dr Fadzilah Kamsah
Petua Dr. Fadzilah Kamsah
Story Regarding Didik Anak
Just to ambil iktibar untuk mendidik diri & family.
So, it's good if we can remind each other because in Rasulullah's lastsermon, baginda pun did mention that all those who listen to him (on shall pass on his words to others, and those to others again; and may the last ones understand his words better than those who listen to him directly...
Yang baik datang dari Allah & yg kurang itu is from my weaknesses.

Doa Sewaktu Sujud Dan Keistimewaannya
KEISTIMEWAANNYA
---------------------
Ahli neraka juga mendapat keselamatan kerana bekas sujudnya. Rasulullah s. a. w. bersabda yang bermaksud:-
Wassalam.

Alif Lam Lam Ha..
Vander Hoven, a psychologist from Netherlands, announced his new discovery about the effect of reading the Quran and repeating the word ALLAH both on patients and on normal persons.
The Dutch professor confirms his discovery with studies and research applied on many patients over a period of three years. Some of his patients were non-Muslims, others do not speak Arabic and were trained to pronounce the word "ALLAH" clearly; the result was great, particularly on those who suffer from dejection and tension. Al Watan, a Saudi daily reported that the psychologist was quoted to say that Muslims who can read Arabic and who read the Quran regularly could protect themselves from psychological diseases.
The psychologist explained how each letter in the word "ALLAH" affects healing of psychological diseases. He pointed out in his research that pronouncing the first letter in the word "ALLAH" which is the letter (A), released from the respiratory system, controls breathing. He added that pronouncing the velar consonant (L) in the Arabic way, with the tongue touching slightly the upper part of the jaw producing a short pause and then repeating the same pause constantly, relaxes the aspiration. Also, pronouncing the last letter which is the letter (H) makes a contact between the lungs and the heart and in turn this contact controls the heartbeat.
What is exciting in the study is that this psychologist is a non-Muslim, but interested in Islamic sciences and searching for the secrets of the Holy Quran. Allah, The Great and Glorious, says, We will show them Our signs in the universe and in their own selves, until it becomes manifest to (remember me in ur Dua) ALLAHU AKBAR (Allah is great).
During the next 60 seconds, stop whatever you are doing, and take this opportunity to share this information with everyone yo know on your contact list...
May Allah bless you... Amin... Insya - Allah...

Sejarah Ayat Kursi
ﻪﺗﺎﻛﺮﺑﻭﷲﺍﺔﻤﺣﺭﻭﻢﻜﻴﻠﻋﻡﻼﺴﻟﺍ & Salam Sejahtera.
Sabda baginda lagi;
Rasullullah s. a. w. bersabda, " SAMPAIKANLAH PESANKU BIARPUN SATU AYAT"

Cinta...... Abadi
Mungkin kita terlupa dgn artikel ini. Detik-detik Rasulullah SAW Menghadapi Sakaratul Maut.
Matahari kian tinggi, tapi pintu rumah Rasulullah masih tertutup. Dialah malakul maut," kata Rasulullah, Fatimah pun menahan ledakkan tangisnya.
Detik-detik semakin dekat, saatnya Izrail melakukan tugas. Perlahan ruh Rasulullah ditarik. Nampak seluruh tubuh Rasulullah bersimbah peluh, urat-urat lehernya menegang. "Jibril, betapa sakit sakaratul maut ini." Perlahan Rasulullah mengaduh.

What is endometriosis?
Studies suggest between 5 -10% of premenopausal women have the condition, with higher rates in infertile women.
The body responds by trying to surround the ‘problem’ area with scar tissue to protect the rest of the body. The formation of scar tissue (adhesions) can result in the pelvic structures becoming stuck together, unable to move freely. Consequently, any movement such as that occurring in ovulation, sexual intercourse or emptying of the bowel can be painful. Over time, the endometrial tissue may also enlarge and form cysts, particularly in the ovaries. These cysts are often referred to as ‘chocolate cysts’ because they are filled with old blood which is chocolate-like in colour.
Symptoms
Women with endometriosis may not recognise they have the condition, believing their symptoms to be normal period pain and something “they just have to put up with”.
Symptoms include:
*Period pain (dysmenorrhoea)
*Pain during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
*Pelvic and abdominal pain outside of menstruation
*Abnormal bleeding- including heavy bleeding, clotting, prolonged bleeding, irregular bleeding, premenstrual spotting
*Bowel disturbances - including painful bowel motions, diarrhoea, constipation, bleeding from the bowel
*Difficulty in getting pregnant
*Painful urination
*Lower back, thigh and/or leg pain
*Premenstrual syndrome
The anticipation of pain or discomfort, recurrence of symptoms following treatment and fertility problems can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, anger and hopelessness and stress. It is important to acknowledge the mental and emotional symptoms that can be associated with having this condition.
Causes
Other theories suggest stray endometrial cells occur during the formation of the foetus or are spread through the body via the blood or lymphatic system or through gynaecological surgery. Research is also examining whether there is a genetic component.
Risk factors
Menstrual pattern- The frequency, length and heaviness of menstrual periods influence a woman’s endometriosis risk. An early onset of menarche (first period), short cycle length (under 28 days), long duration of flow (more than seven days), regular periods and heavy periods are all associated with an increased risk.
Family history - Women who have a family member who has been diagnosed with endometriosis have a higher risk of acquiring the condition. Similarly, women with a family history of the condition are more likely to have severe endometriosis.
Reproductive history - As pregnancy and lactation reduce the number of menstrual periods (and the opportunities for retrograde menstruation) having no or few children increases a woman’s risk of endometriosis.
Immune factors - It appears that women who suffer from endometriosis also experience a higher incidence of autoimmune conditions like chronic fatigue, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, allergies and asthma.
Obstruction in outflow of menstrual blood -An obstruction (due to factors like congenital abnormalities, narrow cervix, etc) is thought to increase the likelihood of retrograde menstruation and, therefore, endometriosis.
Environmental toxins - Animal studies have suggested that environmental toxins like the chemical by-product dioxin may increase the risk of endometriosis. Dioxin may contribute to the development of endometriosis by mimicking the female hormone oestrogen and/or by compromising the immune system.
Diagnosis
A doctor may be able to detect signs of endometriosis during a pelvic examination. Tenderness in the pelvic region, a uterus that appears fixed and immobile (due to adhesions) and enlarged ovaries (from chocolate cysts) may all indicate the presence of endometriosis. If enlarged ovaries or a mass in the pelvis is detected, a vaginal ultrasound (which uses a probe inserted into the vagina) may be performed.
The only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis, however, is through laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure which involves inserting a long, thin telescope (laparoscope) into the abdomen through an incision near the navel. Gas is then pumped into the abdomen to separate the organs for better visualisation. The surgeon will look for signs of endometriosis and may take tissue samples for testing. A person’s endometriosis will be classified from mild to severe (stage I-IV) according to the location, amount, depth and size of the endometrial implants. Endometrial implants may also be removed at this time (see surgical treatment section).
Treatment options
One of the common misconceptions concerning endometriosis is that having a baby will cure the condition. While endometriosis is generally suppressed during pregnancy, 50-60 percent of women will experience a recurrence within five years, with some women’s symptoms returning as soon as their periods resume. Some women actually experience a worsening of symptoms in the first few months of pregnancy.
Drug treatment
Combined oral contraceptive pill - The combined oral contraceptive pill contains a combination of the hormones oestrogen and progestogen. Oral contraceptives may be useful for women with milder symptoms, particularly adolescents and women who do not wish to take the other drugs available. In the treatment of endometriosis oral contraceptives are sometimes given continuously for several months (skipping the sugar pills). Taking oral contraceptives continuously eliminates the withdrawal bleed and, therefore, the incidence of period related pain. It also reduces the amount of blood and the possibility of further endometrial implants occurring by retrograde menstruation. Common side effects of the combined oral contraceptive pill include fluid retention, nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, vaginal discharge and decreased sexual drive.
Progestogens - Progestogens act as anti-oestrogens, inhibiting the growth of endometrial implants. Progestogens are available as tablets, injections, an intra-uterine system (Mirena) or an implant (Implanon). Side effects differ for each delivery methods but may include weight gain, fluid retention, nausea, breakthrough bleeding, depression and fatigue (less likely with the intra-uterine system).
GnRH agonists - These drugs are a modified version of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is a naturally occurring hormone. GnRH agonists work by stopping the ovaries producing the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone, inducing an artificial menopause. The lack of oestrogen causes the endometrial implants to degenerate. GnRH agonists are administered by injection or nasal spray.
Side effects of GnRH agonists include menopause-related symptoms and a reduction in bone density. Although this latter side effect is largely reversible after ceasing medication, treatment with GnRH agonists is generally limited to a six month course to minimise the risk. “Add back” therapy, adding back low doses of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be used to overcome some of the side effects. GnRH agonists should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Danazol and Dimetriose - Danazol is a mild anabolic steroid that contains a weak form of testosterone, the male hormone. It creates a menopause-like state. Most of the women who take Danazol stop having a menstrual period and many experience other side effects. Side effects include those related to a drop in oestrogen (vaginal dryness, hot flushes and night sweats) and those related to an increase in testosterone (weight gain, decrease in breast size, acne or oily skin, increase in facial and body hair and voice changes). Muscle cramps, headaches, irritability, depression, decreased libido and increased cholesterol can also occur.
Dimetriose is a steroid which results in a menopause-like state. The side effects are similar to Danazol, although Dimetriose is reported to have fewer masculinising side effects. Both Danazol and Dimetriose should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Surgical treatment
The surgical removal of endometrial implants and adhesions can often be carried out at the time of the diagnostic laparoscopy. Accessible endometrial implants and adhesions are removed using a range of different instruments. Like with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with the use of anaesthetics. The most common side effect experienced by women following laparoscopic surgery is pain and discomfort in the abdomen and/or shoulder due to residual carbon dioxide gas.
If a woman has extensive endometriosis, adhesions or other circumstances which make using a laparoscope difficult, a laparotomy may be recommended as it provides greater access than a laparoscopy. A laparotomy is a major surgical procedure involving an incision in the abdominal wall. This procedure carries with it greater risks and a longer anaesthetic. A laparotomy will require 3-5 days in hospital and 3-5 weeks to fully recover.
If a woman’s symptoms persist despite drug and conservative surgical treatment a hysterectomy may be suggested (see the Centre’s factsheet on hysterectomy for further details). This type of surgery is usually only chosen as a last resort and in cases where all other forms of treatment have failed. If the ovaries are unaffected by endometriosis they may be retained to avoid a surgically induced menopause. However, studies show that women who keep one or both of their ovaries often experience a recurrence of symptoms with some requiring further surgery. Women should discuss the pros and cons of keeping their ovaries at hysterectomy with their doctor.
If women have both ovaries removed at hysterectomy they are often prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to relieve menopausal symptoms. However, as HRT contains oestrogen there is a concern that it will lead to a persistence or recurrence of endometriosis. It is often recommended that women are not given HRT until several months after surgery to ensure that any remaining endometrial implants have time to completely regress.
Diet and exercise
Complementary therapies While there is limited scientific evidence supporting the use of such therapies for endometriosis, many women report finding complementary therapies helpful. There are a number of therapies available but those used most commonly in the treatment of endometriosis are herbal medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), aromatherapy, homeopathy, massage, yoga and meditation. Complementary therapies can assist in balancing hormone levels, relieving pain and reducing feelings of stress and depression often associated with the condition.
Women interested in using complementary therapies should consult a qualified practitioner who can properly advise them on a course of treatment. It is also important that women disclose their use of any complementary therapies to their doctor, particularly if they are also undergoing medical treatment for endometriosis.
Emotional support
